a) A few thousand US troops
b) A few thousand Shiite Militia's
c) A few thousand Iraqi National Army forces
d) A few thousand Sunni Insurgents/terrorists
e) A few thousand Al Qaeda/foreign terrorists

(And who in their right mind would only send a few thousand US troops to try and secure a city of 6 million people w/ 1000s of terrorists mixed in)?

It's a combination of A, B, C, D and E. I wouldn't say a few thousand of E though, I personally doubt that Al Qaeda is in Iraq.

Who in their right mind wouldn't send a few thousand US troops to secure Baghdad, especially seeing as how we are responsible for the state it's in and securing its future? Is there any other force that could tame Baghdad in the face of the insurgency?

Terrorists can disrupt the city easily because they can choose the time and place to bomb , it does not necessarily mean they are in control of the city.If they were fighting a conventional war they would loose no question about it.
I am not American but I wish that your troops could come home it is not worth their lives to die for those people. The money would be better spent on your own soil. That`s my opinion anyway.

Baghdad is controlled by Coalition and Iraqi Security Forces (ISF). There are pockets where JAM and TWJ have influence but they can't operate at will. They have to react to our actions.

Also, the West Side of Baghdad is realitively stable. I have very few contact instances in our area as compared to two months ago when this place was the Wild West. What we're doing is working and is getting better. The rest of the city just needs to catch up.

EDIT:

Pfo:

Yes. Al-Qaida IS in Iraq. That's a fact.

I think it's B, but also is a combination, depending on what part of the city you travel to. I agree with your assessment of sending more troops. Not going to make one bit of difference.
