Technically, your previous employer is only able to verify when you worked for them. This is generally done by someone in HR who you mroe than likely had no relationship with. Any other comments are generally favorable because if a prior employer gives you a bad review, you can actually sue them. (welcome to the US legal system...where one can no longer open their mouth or speak their mind)

Your new employer can use you old boss as a reference for you/or against you. It should not cause any friction.
