There is a way you can clean silver by soaking it in a pan with water, aluminum foil and some cleaning product. Does anyone know exactly how to clean silver this way? What is the cleaning product? Does it matter what the pan is made of?

Yes.

Line your pan with aluminium foil. Cover w/baking soda. Pour boiling water over silver and soda.

You will see the tarnish come right off. Using tongs, remove the silverware and place into cold water. Wear a face mask because it smells like rotten eggs.

*You are creating a miniature plating reactor in your pan/sink/vessel. Cold water stops the reaction. You shouldn't do this on silverplated products because it can remove the silver layer.

It is not a cleaning product, but simple baking soda.

I have done this in a plastic laundry tub several times....it works well. All you do is dissolve some baking soda in the water, shape the aluminum foil to hold water, and deep enough for the water to cover your silver articles, pour itin, place the silver, and come back a few hours later.....clean silver!
