Could calls automatically be placed to all cell phones in a certain cell tower zone to alert all in the area that a tornado warning is in effect? Could this work? Has it been tried? Is it being worked on?

I mean using the cell phones as an extension of the EMERGENCY BROADCAST SYSTEM. I know some places now have AMBER ALERTS that are automatically sent to cell phones in the area where a child has been abducted. The guy that answered "AM radios" are better and cheaper.... how many people do you know that carry around an AM radio all the time? Just seems like a text message to all in the immediate area, from a cell tower or two would be the way to connect with the people that needed it the fastest and the most. Government needs to use this means as an extension of the EMERGENCY BROADCAST NETWORK... this is a test and only a test... had this been an actual emergency you would have been instructed... yada yada yada

In my opion it's not a practical solution as for the problem. one of my issues are not every tower is owned by the same provider. It would tie up a tower when it might be needed to route and emergency cell call. I think AM radio is a far more efficient tool for this purpose. For crowded areas there are far better and cost efficient solutions than this. Madah.com uses the ISM band for wireless mass anouciation. I think this is a better idea and more practical in the long run.

i dont know if it could work, because there would be an over load of calls and they wouldnt go thru. if you tried to make a call during the 9/11 emergancy you might have found that out. my mom is a government employee so as soon as i heard about it i called her to tell her to get out of dc, she's too close to the pentagon for my liking, but i got a recording instead that my call couldnt go thru due to the amount of calls being placed at the time and to try again later.

Calls, no, Textmessages, yes. There are Several Mass Text Messaging systems out there. they work by sending a Text message to all cellfone in the radius of 1 or several Antenna-poles
