with your service provider, take time to read that agreement

No it has no effect on credit.. and actually I know for a fact Verizon Wireless doesn't even report to credit bureaus. As long as you pay your early termination fee you can cancel your contract with no problems. Only exceptions to having to pay early termination fee's include things like getting shipped off to iraq or death... there may be more but I can't think of any.

If you pay the fee and make sure there is no balance on your account when you cancel it, there's no effect on your credit except to show you had an account with the company and kept it up to date. The termination fee is just the company's way of trying to keep you, but there's no legal reason why you can't change companies.
