Still today a woman can not commute alone late at night without having to face an awkward situation. Why is it that life is so difficult for women? what should be done to stop it?

I don't know what to do to stop it, but I used to work with some men from India. One of them got mad at me one day and pushed me really hard where I ran into the counter and cut my leg on a nail. I knocked the **** out of him and let him know real quick that he was in America. That fixed my problem. Maybe if women in India were allowed to stand up for themselves they could fix it too.

Well Deeksha, talking about commuting at late night, it's not safe even for guys. They have a constant fear of being looted for the money and being stabbed. At the day time men are pickpocketted and women are molested. Women are troubled for the assets they possess and men for the assets they possess. It's only that men are physically stronger and take care of themselves and women can't. Why does a woman or a guy wanna move out at late nights alone when she or he cannot handle the situation? Even guys, who move out at late nights move in groups. Else even they are in constant fear of a few awkward things that could possibly happen.

Clear your statistics before you post any question. The percentage of guys being attacked at nights is far more higher than the percentage of women being attacked.

And about respect, women have recieved enough respect in the country. How could you just generalise the picture from a woman's point of view? If the country is not safe enough for women, how come there's an enormous rise in the percentage of women being employed since last 20 years. Women have ventured into possibly all fields. have you ever tried comparing a womans life in this country today and what it was 40 years ago?

:-)

Just to remind you that women have always been respected in India....right from the great queens like Jhansi ki rani, Razia Sultan....also India was one of the first countries to give voting rights to women...One of the first countries in the modern world to be governed by a women Prime minister....one of the first countries also in the modern world which alleged that there be no discrimination as far as the salaries go both for men and women...you shall be surprised as to how many countries in the West still discriminate women as their salaries are lower compared to men...
As far as commuting goes I think a women is safer in Mumbai than in Paris or New York....

i don't think women have any value at all in India!! we're in the 21st century and parents still murder their daughters at birth preferring boys!

i think education is really needed here. and if the happy rich people start thinking about the ones living on the streets maybe things could actually change in india. having 2 social classes (extremely rich & extremely poor!) is very unhealthy for the country.

@Jenn

Funny you should say that honey, But isnt America the place where a woman gets raped every 4 minutes as opposed to every 25 minutes in India and theres almost twice the number of spousal/partner abuse aimed at women than in India. I hate it when people start generalizing crap like this about India. I agree there are parts of India where backward thinking results in people committing atrocious acts with women as victims. But I will have you know that it does not hold true for all of the country

India is undergoing a transformation of sorts where women are getting to be more and more independent, which by itself is a good thing. But an offshoot of this is when some women start thinking even the slightest adversity they face is a result of sexist attitudes and misogynistic acts. Thats where I stop agreeing with them. If they want to be placed on the same level as men then they ought to expect to be given the same treatment which will include facing the same difficulties.

As for women not being able to walk to stores alone in the night. I dont think women in various parts of America enjoy the same luxury. In places like Dallas n Baltimore if you venture out in the night, you're asking for a deathwish. Now dont get me wrong. I love America, but you have to stop drawing comparisons with America when it comes to emancipation of women. Didnt India just outlaw spousal abuse last year . I'll have you know America wasnt all that far ahead in that either. They passed a law against it in 1984.

I hope I didnt come across as someone who hates women, because au'contraire I think they're the most wonderful creation of god.

To the asker all I have to say is, its just not women in India who are faced with such problems. Because it presents itself in one way to you(problem of walking alone in the night) and not the same way to women of say America is no indication of how high an esteem women are held in, in that country.

But I agree the situation sucks for women in general that they're looked at as just sex objects by a majority of us men. Now I wouldnt say that I am a pure specimen of man and that I dont think about women sexually. Of course I frickin do. But I dont stop myself there, I also want to be addicted to your sexy and wonderful minds too. And that helps me stop myself from doing anything stupid because to me seduction involves wining over your minds too

/normal

Now if you will excuse me I have to go give some women in some *cough mature videos the respect they desire too

Because, we think that she is for our enjoyment....Unless, we change that mindset, she will be the sufferrer. When ever we see a woman, we should remember our sister / mother and then only we can give due respect to her.
