Mrs. Clinton did not try this, all she did was initiate discussions in a committee to examine this, I know, much hot air about very little.
There is some sort of idea that public health won't impact on everyones health, but that is very false, if you have a contagious disease, or a crippling disease, like polio was, you have enormous economic costs both in caring for and rehab efforts. A lot of Bush's war funding isn't in the official budget, that's going to inhibit our funding for many things in the future. You can't expect the oil companies to look for something that will curb their profits, and you can't expect an administration with deep debts to the drug and insurance industries to do something to keep people covered instead of higher and higher premiums and no discounts on government drug purchases.
Even the Bush plan to give tax breaks on some health insurance is nonsense, if you have a family its between eight and ten thousand dollars a year out of pocket for insurance, who can afford that? And do you think if your company says no more health coverage as so many are doing, you will receive the money they save in your check each week. If you do I have some stock in Enron you might want.
We are in pitiful shape, we need universal coverage, and not just for kids. To be a healthy society we need to have a heathy population and since we aren't number one in any catagory of health care, (coming in seventeenth in infant mortality for heavens sake) its time to stop worrying about the insurance companies profit margins, (up by the way) and take care of our citizens.

Its all about priorities. The money is there...its just a question of how it should be spent. The President decided - on his own, truly - that the money is better spent on the political stability of another country than the health of its own citizens.
I realize that the issue isn't that simple, and not as cut and dried. But sometimes, to understand the true nature of a situation, you need to break it down to the most simplistic of terms. You ask if the government could afford healthcare for all children. The answer is yes. But that money has been allocated for other programs...the military in particular. I think you would find the numbers staggering if you knew how much money it cost - each day - to keep the US military in Iraq.

Perhaps you should give up your internet connection so your children can afford to see the doctor. Most ear infections clear up on their own. Give a little motrin to ease the inflammation. Antibiotics are unnecessary and are over prescribed. As for the dental bill, brush and floss regularly. While regular dental exams are important so long as you do your job at home with the brushing and flossing, limiting sugary/sticky foods, you should be able to go a year or two without an exam/cleaning.

Yes the Government can afford it, but they will never do it. Too many fat cats making more and more $$$$ each day. Get a job with health and dental, get real most find it hard to get a job, about time the USA spent more on the people than on wars.

It's funny that people address the issue as being a state welfare system. If you looked at the billions in corporate welfare that are given to the oil companies, corporate farms, and defense companies, not to mention money for the war, you'd be sickened.
Yes, we can afford to give all of our children healthcare. All of our adults, too. Every other industrialized nation does.

I agree with you that they need to settle their own problems.........
I do agree all kids need health care. But who is responsible> Bottom line its the parents, Why should the government have to supply this. They need to try to get good jobs with benefits, But if they are working full time and cant the government ought to have a program to get some covered services for a premium
This could only work if we force people off welfare and make them work. Too many living off welfare and wont work because it would lower their "benefits".
But they need to set guidelines so that the parents arent running the kids to the emergency room when its not an emergency.
If we are going to get some kind of health care for kids we need major welfare reform. Make parents work. Make them care for their kids, No work no welfare.

The budget proposal from the Bush administration is $2.9 Trillion dollars. You don't think a few Billion for our children is affordable? That's like saying if you had $100 that $2 would be too much to spend for your children to be healthy.

Simple, they don't want to. Medical Care and pharmaceuticals is big money and who do you think helps get these people elected well the medical care and pharmaceutical companies of course. So ask yourself would you expect someone that takes millions from Medical groups to actually put into law something that would hurt the medical groups bottom line.

Government health care would cost more than the Iraq war, or else it would be terrible quality. Hillary already tried this when Bill was in office, and it was a disaster, I don't want to wait around for round 2. Why can't people just get jobs that offer medical / dental plans?

The social security credit card can get all citizens healthcare.
For pennies on the dollar.
No reason for anyone being with out health care needing it.
