After trying to figure out why you would teach this to a 2nd grader, I set to work on your dilemma.

Food might be a good way to introduce these concepts. Think of the ingredients in a recipe. You can use EVERYTHING (the UNION) in the cupboard to make something to eat, but how would it taste? The trick is to use only the necessary items (the INTERSECTION) to prepare the dish. You can use it for sandwiches, salads, ice cream sundaes, banana splits, etc.

Animals in a zoo could work, also. Zebras and tigers in the same enclosure? Both have stripes. Still, not a good idea. I think you can come up with some great ideas.

Good luck. I hope this helps.
