Petty cash is used for small, incidental expenses. It is not generally used for regular recurring items like salaries, utilities, rents and such. These are budgeted items that are paid out of a specific budget line in order to better track them.

Petty cash is generally used for any small expense that a business may encounter (pizza party, birthday present, or anything else that may be considered 'needed' that costs under $50).
