Depends on which hand they write with- yes, but some moms carry baby on the right so the baby can hear their heartbeat better. It can soothe the baby when other things don't work. I carried my kids on both sides depending how old they were. My son would calm down when he heard my heartbeat & finally go to sleep. When my daughter wanted to be carried around a lot I would carry her on my right side using my hip to hold her up.

I agree with what people said here about the right-handed mothers wanting to keep their right hand/arm free to do other things. :)

However, I just wanted to add that if I ever decide to have kids, I won't carry them on EITHER side. I unfortunately have some back problems, nothing serious, but if I were to walk around with one hip sticking out with a baby or toddler on top of it, I'd most likely develop chronic pain. :( Sad but true. In fact, any time I see mothers carrying their kids like this, it almost hurts me physically. Whether they know it or not, what they're doing is very BAD for the spine, hips, muscles and connective tissues in the back.

I carry mine on my right side because I am left handed.

I carry everything on my left side. It just feels 'right' that way.

most women are right handed, carrying thier child on the left side leaves the more usable hand free.

More than likely the mothers you see are right handed. They leave the right hand free to do other things.

Not all women do that. It depends if they write with their left or their right hand.

They do that only if they are right handed which the majority of people are.
