Lucky you. I have been tp Paris several times, and there are plenty of things to like about the place. Don't take any notice of negative replies to your question. Everywhere in the world has its good and bad points. Sure, Paris does have its traffic and pollution etc, just like any other big city in the world. It also has some very friendly and helpful local people, lovely restaurants and bars, and all kinds of quaint and romantic areas.

The best way to get around is by metro. It's quick, cheap, efficient, safe and has works of public art, busking all round.

Paris is in general, pretty safe, but the normal 'big city precautions' still apply. Watch out for the pickpockets, who tend to operate on the metro, in cafes and restaurants, anywhere crowds are gathered, and in Internet cafes. Make it hard for them (use a money belt, paper-clipped to your waste, loop bag handles round chairlegs if seated) and you won't have any trouble from them.

Try and speak a little bit of French, even if you make a complete hash of it. Locals are used to tourists coming to their city, but really appreciate your efforts if you try and talk to them in their language.

Seek out the quaint areas. Going to Montmartre (Anvers metro station) is a must. The area hasn't changed much since it was built, and you have the magical Sacre Coeur atop the tallest hill in the city, to go and see. There are also lots of lovely bistros and restaurants in the quarter, perfect for a candle lit dinner. Another good place to visit is Rue Mouffetarde (Metro Censier Daubenton) which has a fun street market and is very lively at night.

Ascend the Eiffel Tower (Metro Bir Hakeim) at sunset or actually during the night when the city is lit up by colourful lights (queues can be long though). Visit Pere Lachaise cemetery (Metro Pere Lachaise) in the east of the city and see the names of famous people who now 'live' there.

Walk along the famous 'Voie Triomphale' which is an axis running diagonally across the city, taking in most of the most famous monuments along the way. Start at the Louvre Pyramid, go through the Tuilleries gardens, see the obelisk at Place de la Concorde, stroll up the famous Champs Elysees, finish for a while looking at the Arc de Triomphe. Then get the metro (line 1 westbound) to Esplanade de la Defense, and stroll right through Paris futuristic business quarter with some of the most striking architecture of any big city.

Paris is also great for shopping. Aside from the Champs Elysees you also have les Grandes Boulevards just north of the centre, St Ouen flea market around the back of Montmartre, and the splendid quarter of Bastille. I reckon this area has a kind of bohemian, 'Brighton' feel and is home to all sorts of quirky shops and bars.

Paris is a world class place, and for good reason. Go with an open mind and a good guidebook and you will have a great time!

Just thought I'd add this note after reading other answers. Tickets to Paris is REALLY an awesome gift. Don't let people tell you otherwise, they're just jealous!

Congrats!!!
Ok, make sure you guys are in the heart of Paris. If you go too far out of the way, you'll get hassled by language barriers. Take the metro as much as possible, its very safe, cheap and fast. You'll need it a little phrase book for places like the metro and certain restaurants.
They eat very late in France, so try to shift yourself over to their time schedule quickly. They often don't start dinner until after 8.
Have a great time! Paris is magical. Enjoy the food, the fun, and the romance!!!

I don't want people to think I"m rude or something but it is based on a personal experience:
Parisiens are racist. You be careful when you address them. Don't take it personal if they swear at you (they do it to everyone). Make sure you know what you want to ask before asking and try to formulate the question in advance.
Other than that Paris is wonderful. My suggest is that, depends on your budget, you can visit museums during the day (they take long time to visit them all) and party all night long.

Enjoy your trip.
