On the internet it's considered shouting. Also some people find all caps hard to read. I don't think it adds any clarity either. Most people were taught the proper use of capital letters in grade school. To see them used for other than their intended purpose makes the message harder to comprehend because they are being used improperly. If you want to type something easier to read use a larger or simpler font.

Because usually in books caps are used to emphasize a particular word in a sentence and when they're all done it makes it look like its emphasizing the whole thing, which seems either patronizing or rude to the reader.

B/c it's netiquette to use lower case unless you are yelling not to mention that it's very hard to read sentences in all caps!

Wiki says:

Contributors should avoid the use of all CAPITAL LETTERS in posts. All CAPS is considered "shouting" and causes readability issues

no, its considered yelling. and if you've ever studied typography (and i have because i'm a graphic designer) people tend to read based on the shape of the word, the hights of the different letters and the shapes they make, and dont actually read all the letters, so when you type in all caps, thats not possible, and it actually takes longer to read something in caps then in mixed case.

hope that helps!

All caps is the equivalent of yelling at someone. Very rude.

It just seems as though the person has STARTED YELLING AT YOU. Although, I admit I do this from time to time, as I am usually doing data entry WITH CAPS LOCK ON.

you feel wrong. Read a book about about page layout and design and you will see that it is MUCH easier to read text that is in upper and lowercase. Also, the all caps are used to draw attention, but if attention is drawn to everything, whats the point?

Here's an example:

so which block is easier to read ?

It's because we've associated all caps with yelling.

clearer? perhaps. it also means you're shouting and although some may consider it rude, it can also be used for emphasis.
