If that's the case elmjunburke, why do so many Americans insist on referring to themselves as African American, Irish American, Italian American, etc....?

I believe that there is at least one, if not more, Native American in Congress. The most well known was Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell, Elected to the U.S. Senate November 3, 1992, the first American Indian to serve in the Senate in more than 60 years.


Native American in this context meaning not born in the us but tracing one's heritage to the Native American's of Pre-Columbus time.

Ada Deer (Menominee descent) was the assistant secretary for the Department of the Interior: Indian Affairs under Clinton.

Interestingly enough, I've actually read that Bush has some Native American ancestry.

President Bush was born and raised in America. Native means---- of the place of birth.
