I'm happy to say that I didn't meet the standards of any "clique" at my high school. As important it was at the time, I think if I had succumbed to any number of the clique facets it would have seriously impaired who I am today.

It's hard to be accepted and even harder to maintain that acceptance. Cliques are formed to pigeonhole those who have little self-esteem. Grouped together they feed off of belittling and ostracizing others who exhibit differentiation. In all honesty, I believe that cliques are much more detrimental than a street gang.

I wasn't in a clique. I was friends with many different people, from many different "cliques". And because of that reason, I never fit in to any one clique. It was hurtful, but at least I can truthfully say now that I didn't pick and choose my friends for their status.

Ten years later, I still don't pick my friends because of their status.

we were the "socially acceptable freaks" - we partied excessively, but dressed like ordinary students and actually still maintained good grade averages and kept out of trouble... weren't accepted by the "socs" (soshes) or popular kids, didn't want to go all out "burn-out" or freak, like the heavy partiers...

The prettier girls wanted to hang around with me ~ I didn't like it so much, they were conceited. I just mainly hung around with anyone who was silly just like me.
