Reagan and Clinton were the last great diplomats.

the problem with diplomacy is it is determined by the people directly involved. Its not that we have lost faith in diplomacy, but faith in the diplomats.
I still have faith in diplomacy, but I think that can only take you so far. Both parties have to be diplomatic for that to work.
Osama doesn't seem like much of a diplomat to me.

sure funny the lack of current policies some have. if you mean like not dealing with a regime that denies history and refuses to follow the governance of your favorite organization the UN. then yes diplomacy is off the table. however we do engage in diplomacy for other areas such as currently in egypt, pakistan, india, using help from saudi arabia to pressure iran and syria, multiple countries in south america and probably others that you dont know about. this is an extremely onesided and false statement.

We haven't lost faith in it! But there comes a time when it's clear that it has borne no fruit - as in Iraq. And there are also times where negotiating itself is not in our best interest. That doesn't mean that we stop talking and start shooting, but it means we don't run and respond to every request to talk.

If Iran doesn't halt its nuclear programs as a precondition to talks - something many if not all of our allies support - then what is there to talk about? Speaking to them now would appear to be giving in to blackmail.

I have to reject your premise, or say "never" as my answer.

I would add that Bush Sr. was also a good diplomat. We didn't lose faith in diplomacy, it's just that Bush Jr. doesn't believe in it. Unfortunately that is the case, he should try it. You can't lose ANYTHING if you just try it, maybe time?
