Let's say that one day the president opened a broadcast to the entire world, with the message that earth has been contacted by a race of intelligent life from outer space and they offer us benefits such as these:
1.) cheap, clean abundant energy
2.) an answer to disease, poverty, and hunger
3.) access to medicine, science, technology, transportation, etc. thousands of years beyond our current levels
4.) the protection of a far-reaching military that is unaffected by the politics of earth
5.) an education that has the benefit of millions of combined years of experience from intelligent civilizations across the galaxy

sounds good so far. but here is the catch: in order to receive these benefits we must accept the following conditions:

1.) we must dismantle our current world-wide system of government and military to adopt theirs, but the new military and government would be composed mostly of citizens of earth
2.) all of the world's currency would be scrapped in order to adopt the universal currency used by that empire
3.) (far-fetched, i know) all people must accept the surgical installation of some kind of universal translator that translates their language into the common language of the empire
4.) the tax system was revised to a universal tax system where the tax monies went directly back into the planetary economy, while the newly introduced technologies would not be taxed, but the highest form of the empire's government would retain all monies derived from patents, royalties, and licensing.

Would this be beneficial to us as humanity?

Do you think humanity would accept this offer?

How would the world as we know it change?

What would this do for local and global cultures as a whole?

Hey bigwoodenhead, how ya doing. A most interesting question and one that really takes a lot of thought. It is my observation that the human race is basically mistrusting. I have always been taught that if an offer seems to good to be true, then it probably is. For me, I don't think I personally would accept their offer for this one main reason. An offer to share should be given without any expectations of reward. On the surface it would appear that we have everyone to gain from excepting but beware, because this alien race may have a hidden agenda, like our water supply.
