I have a new laptop that I bought two weeks ago, and its been fine until one day I started it up and the login screen had changed from the default Windows XP home login screen, to the professional version (example here: http://www.windowsnetworking.com/img/gif_wxp/wxplgn09.gif), its also incredibly slow to load after I type in my login details, and takes about one minute to load, from its old 20 seconds. I have defragmented it several times and this has done nothing. Any ideas?

It looks as though your machine is logging into a domain rather than a workgroup. Is this machine part of a network? If so, that is why it takes longer than to boot as a stand-alone PC. First off, this could only happen if you do indeed have XP Pro, not XP Home. The home verison will not support domain connection. Boot the pc and log in, then go into the control panel, and open "User Accounts". Under "Pick a Task", select "Change the way a user logs on or off". On the following window, place a check mark in "use the welcome screen", and "use fast user switching". This should set the PC back to the more familiar login screen.

Good Luck!

Some way to make your PC faster:

You need to update your antivirus, your problem may caused by virus.

Disable some start up programs
Start Menu -> Run -> then type msconfig, i suggest you disable ALL of them, it wont cause a problem

Defrag your disk
Start Menu -> Accesories -> System Tools -> Disk Defragmenter

Keep free space on your HD, each HD may have free space approx. 15%

Clean your registry, registry contains files created by software to comunnicate with windows or other software. I suggest Tune Up Utillities and CCleaner ( CCleaner.com its freeware! ). Unused registry will slown down your PC.

Use windows clasicc themes
Right click on desktop -> Properties -> choose windows clasicc for appearance ( It 10 mega less memory consum than XP appearance, 3 mega more if you disable the desktop background ). Dont use ANYTHING to enrich your PC visual ( themes, cursor, screensaver, docker, etc) it needs a lot of RAM.
