We should just work on individual cases instead of declaring unwinnable "wars", like the "War on Drugs" and the "War on Terror".

The War on Terror is indeed misnamed, as I have said many times.

But saying what it is - a war on Islamic fundamentalist death cults, and the regimes that sponsor or otherwise aid them - is politically incorrect.

I think most of the American public, sour though they are on the Iraq war, still approves Bush's concept of going after the terrorists at the source and preventing attacks, rather than treating it as merely a law enforcement issue to prosecute afterwards.

I wish we had Osama too. But if people are concerned about 3,000 casualties and our having "destabilized" Iraq, would they really be less displeased (outraged!) over what it would take to get bin Laden with a full-fledged military assault? Most of Afghanistan (and Pakistan) would declare war on us; the shaky allied governments we have there would fall. Special forces operations are the only chance we have, and I assume those are continuing.

I see where your question is going. The "War on Terror", "War on Drugs", "War on Poverty" etc. is rhetoric and an abuse of the English language, not to mention the solemn powers of Congress. Indeed, look at the framing of the words "War on [something]" and you see the Executive's encroachment into the powers reserved for Congress, the only branch authorized to declare war by our Constitution.

War is declared on nations, not on intangibles or verbs. It makes as much sense as a "War on Incorrect Tooth Brushing Habits".

I think "declaring war" on anything only makes it worse. The zealots will want a crusade and the neutrals will will be put off by it. We need a middle ground where we say, "this is a serious problem an we need a solution that works in our benefit." Fat chance of that happening.

10 years after the "War on Drugs" was launched, the CIA was exposed as one of the world's biggest drug dealers.

Gee I wonder what we'll find out about the "War on Terror" 10 years from now.

We did... it's called the LAW.

For those in the USA, it is US CODE, TITLE 18, PART I, CHAPTER 51 § 1111 Murder

Otherwise your query is inane

our laws indicate a "war on murder". It is against the law and those responsible are prosecuted.
