Cars don't work. People work to buy cars. But seriously, cars generally have an internal combustion engine, consisting of four or more cylinders in which gasoline is mixed with oxygen and ignited to cause a contrlloed explosion that drives apiston that is connected to a rod that rotates. The process is repeated for each cylinder in a preset sequence to Drive the rod, called a drive shaft that, thorugh the action of gear wheels, converts the rotation into a kind of perpendicular motion of two or more wheels, propelling the car forward or back, depending on the gear.

the combustible engine fires when it receives the gasoline, which pumps the pistons up and down which turns the drivetrain which provides movement to the wheels.
Voila! There's your car.

the power is produced by the engine, then through the gear box which give you different ratios allowing you to build up speed, from there to the diff or final drive which in turn drive the road wheels simple in it.
