yes it will affect performance if you put in the wrong type, and yes it does vary with the mother board too. Try http://www.crucial.com/index.asp it's scanner will accurately scan your system and then give you a list of compatible RAM.

Number of pins varies with the motherboard, i think. Most are 184 pins, but there are different ones!

The number of pins refers to the number of pins that the motherboard memory slot needs to have in order for that stick of ram to work with your computer.

It has to match, or it won't work at all.

There are different types of memory used in various motherboards. Each type has a different number of pins. you have to make sure that the ram you buy matches the ram you have in youur computer- same # of pins, same type.
