Say that you work for MI6. Then tell them that you're not allowed to talk about it.

The fact you feel the need to provide a fake occupation suggests major insecurity on one level, and possibly that you could be hanging out with some snobs on another level.

If you pretend to be in an "impressive" occupation,, you will get caught. Someone during the night will ask specific questions about where you went to school, what was your major, who you work for now, as well as specific job related questions.

The best thing you can do is be yourself. If someone needs an impressive occupation to like you, do you really want them for a friend? Besides, if they want to keep in touch, they'll find out eventually that you lied.

Everyone has taken jobs that are stepping stones. You could always say "I work in ______________" but I am working towards getting into (fill in the blank with the type of job you hope to get). Or if you are asked if you work, you could say "yes, but ultimately I want to work in the (fill in the blank) industry."

Keep it simple, don't exaggerate and don't lie.

Lawyer, Barrister or Solicitor. Whatever you choose, make sure that you swat up on it before you go in case you bump into anyone with the same profession who wants to compare notes!

My mate is tour manager for David Bowie and Dave Gilmour amongst others. That's pretty impressive but I'm not sure he'll appreciate you doubling for him.
