First off, if your card number is stolen and someone fraudently uses it, you will get a full refund. You will just have to fill out an unauthorized transaction dispute form. There is a time limit to report fraudulent transactions. Your financial institution will only go back 60 days. Anything before that will be an out of pocket expense for you. Always make sure you check your monthly statements. I work at a financial institution and it kills me to see how much money people lose because they don't check their bank and credit card statements. I use my card on the net a lot though and have never had anyone steal my card number. Just make sure you are on a secure site.

P.S. Remember that no company will ever email you, asking you information about your account or card.

The way a criminal would use that information is to just purchase things for himself with your card. He can't put it in his bank account. Perhaps he could be caught because he'd have to give a billing/mailing address to send the goods to..... However, I shop online all the time, and feel it's safe. Look for the little yellow lock at the bottom of your screen. It should be closed when you are entering sensitive credit card information and stuff.

It is never 100% safe but there are plenty of places you can safely use your card online. Make sure that the seller is reputable (like Amazon) and uses a secure server. In case of fraud though, there is more likely a 0% chance the bank will "get him". That's what makes it so prevalent.
