Now I find myself taking one every night before bed if I want to fall asleep. What is a good way to ween myself off of them without tossing and turning every night?

cut the dosage in half for a couple of nights and then cut it out completly.

i would address the situation of why youre not sleeping first..? is there stress, restless leg syndrome, other sickness, etc.. i would find ways to cope with those questions first.

if you still have problems getting good rest after, being weened of the unisom. i would try a natural product, such as: valerian or california poppy. taking these herbs will help you relax and get a good nights sleep without leaving you feeling groggy the next morning.

try Gaia Herbs, sound sleep/ you can buy these products at any health food store in your town!

Why do you need to stop taking them? You aren't addicted. It's just the antihistamine, Benedryl. So, if they work, take them. But you also need to find out why you aren't sleeping. It happens to all of us from time to time, but usually doesn't last more than a week....unless there has been some trauma (death of a loved one, end of a relationship, etc.) in your life. then you really should see your doctor. There are other things they can prescribe for you that are also non-addictive. Like Trazadone.

Why do you have to wean yourself off of them? Unisom is simply an over the counter anti-histamine that is marketed for both allergies or under the name Unisom to help you fall alseep.

Well....I'll assume you are taking the correct dosage, that's on the package.I would try breaking it in half and taking only one half.....or you can try taking a whole every other day.Either way you might probably suffer from rebound insomnia which should not last long and will go away on it's own.
Good luck to you.......many people think o.t.c.sleeping aids are not habit forming, but they can be,same goes for stuff like benedryl and Nyquil....

you need to stop because your body becomes dependent to Unisom. you can try watching http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=TnTxProductions when you cant fall asleep because they are pretty funny and will leave you exhausted from laughing to ohard.

agreeing with mike,
also try some catnip tea, melatonin, or valerian root capsules instead.
even heated milk before bed will help you relax enough to sleep..
good luck
