Natural selection and genetic drift. And as stated before, we did not evolve from monkeys, but a common ancestor. If you travel far enough back in time, all living creatures have a common ancestor. You could just as easily say we evolved from lizards or spiders. Chimps are just the most genetically similar animals to humans.

Obviously they did not. Evolution says that somewhere in the distant pass we shared a common ancestor. Evolution never said humans are the present day form of monkeys. This is evident in the similarity of primate DNA.
Humans and chimps share about 98% DNA. Therefore the remaining 2% account for all the differences. It is the historical genetics of different primates that continues these differences, called species.

First off, Monkeys did not change over to the present day man.
Evolution states there is an ancestral species common to both man and monkeys. Actually, the chimpanzee is the species most closely related to humans.
Wikipedia is a good place to start.

how evolution works in a nutshell:
we have an island full of turtles. these turles eat grass. now like humans, no single turtle is the same, there are turles with big shells, little shells, long necks, short necks. etc.
suddenly 1 year, theres a terrible drought. the grass doesnt grow as high as it usually does. Suddenly all the turtles with short necks, have great trouble reaching the grass to eat. the turtles with long necks dont.
the result. a lot of turtles with short necks die of starvation, and much less turtles with long necks die. Now the total gene pool of our turtles has a lot more long necked turtle gene's
evolution worked the same for primates (monkies), maybe a flood destroyed the trees, and us monkeys became more adept at living on the ground. what exactly did this is a guess. it canalso be several events.
p.s. its a common myth that we descend from monkies. that is not true. evolution tells us that we have a similar ancestery with monkies. which means we most likely decend from the same species that monkies descended from.

It's not a precise understanding. Long time ago lived a society of Apes, ie. people that has body like big monkeys. But they were not monkeys. Over thousands of years, as the world gets warmer, they starts to loose the hair in their body. Their appearance slowly change to modern human beings.

A common misconception. Apes (not monkeys) and man had common ancestors. Just as you and I did.

In 2001 A space odyssey movie, an obelisk did it.
Once they became carnivorous they became what they ate.
This explanation has about as much science as any darwin, or random genetics, has.
