How about Watchers by Dean Koontz or Strangers by Dean Koontz. Both captured my attention immediately.
Some others I found really good were:
Quietus – Vivian Schilling
Sacred Prey – Vivian Schilling
Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norell – Susana Clarke
The Time-Traveler’s Wife – Audrey Niffenegger
Memoirs of a Geisha – Arthur Golden
The True Story of Hansel and Gretel - Louise Murphy
Year of Wonders – Geraldine Brooks
Strangewood – Christopher Golden
The Ferryman – Christopher Golden
Toyer – Gardner McKay
The Kite Runner – Khaled Hosseini
The Accidental Tourist – Anne Tyler
Me & Emma – Elizabeth Flock
The Meaning of Night: A Confession – Michael Cox
Good luck!

Eragon series are 2nd best but Harry Potter is still number one!!
1. Eragon-1st book
2. Eldest-2nd book
3. Glaedr-(hasn't came out yet) third book
( Just in case if you have interest in them)
The books are a mix between Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and Narnia... The Eragon series are very good, trust me, I'm a very huge fan of Harry Potter but i also love Eragon...

Read Visitors by Bob Chapman, speaking personally I found it a much better story than any of Harry Potter's books and I notice you can pick it up from the Amazon website for less than a fiver now.

Obviously, you haven't gone beyond HP books though they are interesting to read! Have you read books such as Catch 22, Midnight Summer, God Father, just to name a few?

Try Clive Barker's 'The Thief of Always'. It's great!! Not like his other books. It's much more fantasy. I love HP books, too so I feel confident that you will like this one, as well.
