Submit an excerpt to Readers Digest, or some magazine that meets the target audience, If it is self help for teenagers, if it is for women, and so on. Get it out, pound the pavement, make the calls, do the tours, get in the circuit and press the flesh.

I am assuming this is a self-published book, since if it was through a traditional publisher your publisher would be handling all of the promotional details.

You need to get book reviews. Book reviews are vital to get the word out about your book. Many bookstores won't even consider stocking a book unless you present them with a media kit, which would be expected to have reviews in it. Of course, it is difficult to get reviews for self-published titles. Hopefully the link below can be of some help to you.

I have had a lot of success by providing comp copies for conventions. Our company produces RPG books, so I send comp copies to national game conventions to use as door prizes. Often, this means they will include a "thank you" in their programs with a link to my site.

You may also want to get involved with some book giveaways with reader sites. There are dozens of sites dedicated to book readers. They often sponsor book giveaways to promote books. Compulsive Reader is one I have used in the past. You supply them three copies of the book, and they plug your book on the site.

Lauz:
I wrote two books and believe me the one and only way is book signings by the author. The internet is swamped with books as well as the book stores. In all of these books, which will you pick. If the author is there signing, of course this is the one you will buy.
After three years of doing signings my books now sell themselves from mouth to mouth of my readers. Now I have sold as many as ten at a time to readers who buy them as gifts for family at holiday times. It takes time but worth it.

One trick to get bookshops to stock your book is to get as many people as you can to go in/phone/email the store & ask for your book,if they don't have it but are inundated with requests they will get it in stock. To promote it contact your local newspapers and offer to do an interview about it inreturn for them featuring it.Then when a small local newpaper/magazine has done a piece contact a bigger paper/mag and do the same using the earlier publicity as leverage.

Do as many signings as possible. Call local libraries and bookstores to promote your book. Put an ad in the paper. Pay extra for front-facing displays. (Trust me, it works.) Get a website.
