This is interesting.

He makes 43k (1900*12+20000) a year which means he nets about 2800/mo depending on where you live and deductions.

His alimony is 1900/mo or 68% of his net leaving him ~900/mo to raise a small child and support himself.

Numbers aren't adding up. The numbers are wrong or there is additional assets we are not aware of.
you are right on the nose and NO there is other assest!!! thats what is crazy... these new orders came into effect this year, but backdated from june so he is in arreers! so they ARE taking 65%! your smart... can u figure out how to stop all this?? we have been paying for 5 years the marriage was 15 years ohio 1yr for every 3 years this is #6 year... he got screwed! plan and simple

Perhaps her businesses aren't turning a profit. You haven't indicated how much income they generate directly to the spouse. She may invest all of it back into the businesses and thus make no income from it. This way, she would still be showing no income requiring full alimony payments. That is probably what is happening here. You said his wife's salary, but I am not sure if you are talking about the salary she pays herself from the businesses or the alimony payments received from the spouse. If her salary is $20,000 than after taxes she is probably only bringing home $14,000 plus the alimony, which I believe she has to pay tax on and he gets to deduct it from his pre-tax income. So you have to consider the tax benefits he receives as well as the taxes she pays upon receipt of the alimony payments. This will all be over before too long. Justice has nothing to do with it, it is all about fairness and maintaining the level of support the spouse had during the marriage. You should also know that men are entitled to alimony the same as women.

These kind of stories are ridiculous.
My mother in law's husband divorced his wife after 15 years and 3 kids. The kids lived officially with her but lived with him much of the time.
His income: $90K (fire marshall)
Her income: $100K (lawyer)
He also owned and rented out 6 houses.
In the judgement:
she got all 6 houses - worth altogether $1.5 million.
$2000 a month child support
$2000 a month alimony
He also has to cover ALL medical insurance etc until the kids are 25.
He also has to cover any education (college etc) until the kids are 25. He has no say in what they do for college but whatever it is, he has to pay.

I always wondered if she was doing the judge or something to get this.

She also sold all 6 houses and blew all the money on a Ferrari and awesome vacations (not with the kids - with various boyfriends). She told the kids that he doesn't pay enough child support so the kids think he is a deadbeat.

These settlements are SO lopsided in favor of women it is ridiculous. I am all for husbands having to support children in divorces etc but sometimes these are really stupid.

Assuming she didn't work to put him through college, or in any other way pay for him in the early years, then no, shes doing well enough now to take her chances in the world. Perhaps its time for a lawyer to arrange an end to maintenance or at least a lessening of the payments. Certainly you can ask the courts to review the agreement. But be sure you are getting the full story, it amazing what men leave out when they are so sure they are right.

Sounds like the justice was the ex-wifes'. The judge felt that her ex should pay alimony so she can continue to live the life she was accustomed to living before they split. Perhaps there was more to it than what you are telling. Maybe he cheated on the ex-wife and that really made her angry. Thank you.

My opinion on this is..if the woman isnt working and wasnt through out the marriage then yes she should but if she is and was working then she can take care of her self...Everyone always says women should be independent but why when you can get alimony

What were the circumstances of the divorce? Did he cheat? Was it a long term marriage that he bailed out of? Do the businesses actually make a profit?

There are so many unknowns that none of us could give an informed answer.

You may get some answers that "feel good" because they agree with you. That doesn't make them right.

Let me guess: you are the man's new wife (or girlfriend) and you are outraged at this money going to his ex. Well, get over it. Nobody said she deserves it, but the legal system has awarded it to her. If you don't like it, simply go find yourself a man who doesn't have to pay alimony.

I have to agree. This is not right. Sounds like she should be paying him spousal support ;)
