I am no more than 2 weeks pregnant, I just found out- I am scheduled for a tonsillectomy tomorrow and they will only do it under general anesthesia. I am getting my tonsils out because they are huge and are obstructing my breathing so much that I have sleep apnea (stop breathing) at night. I really really really want them out because I'm so scared of sleep apnea (and it's not supposed to be good for babies). However, I know that general anesthesia could be a risk for a baby too. Does anyone know if it is a risk at this stage (only 2 weeks pregnant?). Do you think I should have this procedure done?

Does your surgeon know you are pregnant? Ask him/her what the risks are. Quite honestly, I'm not sure what kind of risk there is, especially so early in your pregnancy. You need to discuss this with your surgeon ASAP so they can figure out what can be done or if there is a risk at all. Do you have a higher risk of pregnancy complications? Go talk to your doctor now. Good luck and congratulations.

Call Motherisk.org. Yes it is long distance but dial a 10-10 plan and it won't cost more than a buck or two. All they do is track information on the safety of prescription, OTC, and illegal drugs, alcohol, nausea, and HIV in pregnant and nursing mothers.

Motherisk's Home Line - (416) 813-6780 - for information about the risk or safety of prescription and over-the-counter drugs, herbal products, chemicals, x-rays, chronic disease and infections during pregnancy. [This is a toll call to our Toronto call centre. Callers may have to wait up to 10 minutes to speak to a counsellor.]

These Helplines are open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST.

You need to be upfront and call your doctor TODAY to discuss this with him. I would also call your OB and inform him/her that you are having this surgery. It is possible that they may have you wait until the 2nd trimester, when things are a little less "developmental" to do this (I had to wait on some cavities until 14 weeks at least.)

The effects of anesthetics on pregnant women and fetuses vary, depending on the type of drug. In general, giving large amounts of general anesthetics to the mother during labor and delivery may make the baby sluggish after delivery. Pregnant women should discuss the use of anesthetics during labor and delivery with their doctors. Pregnant women who may be given general anesthesia for other medical procedures should ensure that the treating physician is informed about the pregnancy.

You need to call the facility that is doing this and talk to them. I believe general anestesia is not recommended while pregnant, but you'll have to discuss with them.

Also, you are about 4-5 weeks pregnant, because you are calculated in weeks of pregnancy from your Last Period start date.

The best advice that I can tell you, is to call up and tell them that you are pregnant and is worried about getting the general anesthesia, and was wondering how it would effect your baby. they will tell you if you should have it or not. good luck.

Let the doctor who is doing your surgery know that you are pregnant. They will be able to advise you aboutt the best steps to take.

I know when I was pregnant, you couldn't take ANYTHING, other than tyenol, and they didn't want you to take that during the first trimester.

It can be done safely and sometimes has to be done for instance a C section delivery. My friend recently was 6 months and had gall bladder surgery. Everything went fine for her and the baby. Best of luck to you and yours!
