Looking for an article/web site about recent dog research that shows they use the process of elimination?

Help My daughter's science fair project is based on research we heard about concerning dogs using the process of elimination to retrive a toy they had never seem from a number of known toys. Neat idea but I can't find the orginal research. Plus, what would the general topic be..this doesn't seem to be operant conditioning.
