Personally I think it is, Apart from a few goldfish bowl computer monitors, it's amazing that you can't tell this film was made in 1979 and there still hasn't been anything to match it in this genre for plot, pace, editing, for it's time, effects and complexity and 'realness' of all the characters.

By the way, while "The thing' was fun and has a few jumps, the gore fest scenes just make me laugh (remember it was made 3 years after Alien) I saw it last night and it owes it's finer moments to Alien, it's pretty clear. Fun, but no way close to perfection.

Everything about that movie just makes it a great experience. I agree about the props in some cases but it gave the movie a feel of a gritty environment. You didn't see ray guns or crystal clean ships, it was an industrious look. The budget was not gigantic in the terms of effects and the whole thing really went back to a Godzilla kind of movie with a guy wearing a rubber suit.

On top of it all, they didn't over expose the Alien and you had this feeling that it was a part of the darkness around it.

I watch the sequels and I like them but they ventured away from the roots of what made the storyline great. The thing that always gives me hope is the "Space Jockey" this is the large creature that was driving the ship with the Aliens when it crashed is a possible storyline someday.

Every now and then rumors bounce about a prequel of the Aliens movies that may center around the origins.

Back to the point at hand.

Aliens had the story, the creature, and was not CG'd to heck and back. It will always be a first in my book.

Blade Runner, Solaris, 2001 A Space Odyssee, the (original) Star Wars Triology, Alien, Aliens, Terminator 1, Robocop, 12 Monkeys, Star Trek 1 (lots of people don't like it, but I did). Don't know if this counts, but The Road Warrior (Mad Max 2). Technically it's post-apocalyptic, but I think it fits. There is some great sci-fi anime out there. Ghost in the Shell, Battle Angel Alita, and Akira are all classics. (Kudos to the other people answering coming up with some classics that I've forgotten about.)

Personally I like the Chronicles of Riddick just a tad bit better, but Alien is definitly one of SciFi's defining movies.

Nope... John Carpenters "The Thing" is/was the first of the "perfect" scifi movies.

That depends on what you base the movie's qualifying factors on. How do you define "perfect" when referring to a movie?
