I have a 9 week old baby boy. I have tried Avent, Dr. Brown's and Playtex bottles. All of the nipples seem to be the same shape and are silicone, but he makes a mess every time he eats. He seems to get more on himself than in his mouth. I do not breast feed, so I soley rely on having a good bottle/nipple combination. Also...he will eat sort of OK for the first few ounces, then he needs to burp. After he burps and takes the bottle back, he acts like he's drowning with his arms in the air and seems to gasp. When I take the bottle out of his mouth, he gets mad and cries for me to put it back in. I use the slow flow nipples. I don't understand why he would suck ok(except for the messyness) and then act like he's drowning? Please help. If anyone has a bottle/nipple suggestion that he may get a better seal on, I would appreciate it!

No rude answers please. If you can't refrain from being rude or a smarta**, then please do not comment. I'm looking for answers that can help me, not answers from people tell me what a horrible person I am for not being able to breastfeed my baby. Thanks in advance!

I had the same problem with my now 5 month old son,I tried everything!!! I use Gerber nuk orthodontic nipples, they come in a newborn slow flow and a 6 month and older medium flow and fast flow,my son can latch right on th these bad boys!! I hate the Gerber bottles but a little hint......i use the Gerber nipples with the Dr.Brown bottles!!They work great!!Good luck,I really think you will like the Gerber nipples,my son hates the silicone as well so make sure you get the Latex!Much nicer,i replace my nipples every 3 weeks and buy 4 at a time,I have 4 Dr.browns.

If your baby has relaxed and settled into a good rhythm with the bottle I would not unlatch him for burping. If he pulls off on his own, of course, you probably need to burp him.

If he is struggling and waving his arms it is probably time to take a break. When he cries, try to distract him with a toy or a pacifier. When he calms down offer the bottle again. If he still flails his arms and acts like he is drowning, he is probably done. If he is going 2 or more hours between feedings he is probably getting enough before you burp him and he is simply not interested in eating any more. Babies will still want the bottle in their mouth because they like to suck on it, but if they are not hungry they will let the formula run down their face. Some children are what I call "snackers". They don't take much at each feeding and they want many small feedings during the day. Both of my girls ate this way for the first few months. At nine weeks this behavior is not a big deal. If he is making wet diapers every 4 hours or so and is not fussy between feedings don't worry about it. Believe it or not, this behavior will work its self out, probably in the next month or so.

If you are still concerned, call and speak with one of the nurses at your pediatricians office.

I did have good luck with the Nuk nipples. You could try those. Bottom line, though, at nine weeks sometimes they still don't eat well!

I have had good luck with the Nuk slow flow nipples, you could try those.

They can be a good idea to use a couple of times a day if your having problems. But iv also heard they can confuse your baby. Your babe is only 5 days old, breastfeeding is hard for the first few weeks they do need to keep being re latched and you can be a bit sore. But it does get much easier. So i would do whatever makes you feel most comfortable it is important that mommy is happy, so if you like the idea of breastshield they use them for every other feed so you get some relief and more time in between feeds to heel but then babe wont get to use to the idea of the different sucking action on a shield x

Try Gerber NUK nipples. The fit on regular cheap bottles. They have a vent, so the baby swallows less air and is shaped to be more like an actual nipple inside his mouth. He should have to stop for air and spill milk out of his mouth so often with this nipple. Try it. I breastfed my baby for a few months, then switched to this nipple, because it was the same as his Gerber NUK pacifier. I swear by these.
Try it!

My son is 8 weeks and he has been doing the same thing for about a month. I learned that when he freaks out (like he is starving) to keep taking the bottle away until he calms down it usually works. Also talk to your doc, I found out my son was still hungry no matter how much I feed him so he was put on rice ceral 3 times a day, and is not doing that anymore, maybe your baby is getting frustrated because he is not being satisfied. Good luck.

i have a 9 week old too. avent and playtex are not good. i have the slow nipples on them both and the formula pours out of his mouth. i hated it. i tried evenflo comfi bottles. they work pretty well. i have recently switched again to playtex nurser supreme. the ones with the bag inserts. they are great. i have the slow nipples and they never leak. my son drinks really well from them.

Check and make sure the nipples you are using a stage one nipples. When you buy a bottle, they usually come with stage 2, and you have to buy stage one. Best of luck!

hes still a baby, still learning to drink.
my daughter did that till about 6 months.
its because they are swallowing too fast, greedy babies, its going down too fast that their reflex kicks in and prepares them to cough incase they choke!
if he makes a mess, maybe the teat is too big??
hope thats a help

as for kealey - if man can go to the moon, im perfectly certain he can perfect formulated milk!
