If it is usually a heated environment kept aroud 80 degrees & the furnance stops working? The local schools are all closed due to extreme temperatures.

There is no minimum temperature for a workplace. People work in freezers that are -20 degrees F. and other work outdoors all year long, regardless of the temperature or weather conditions.

But OSHA does have some cold temperature guidelines on their website that employers should follow. The main point is that employers should train all employees in the signs of exposure and train employees to monitor themselves and others for those signs.

IL does not have a state OSH plan and falls under the jurisdiction of federal OSHA. I have attached a link to one of the OSHA cold temperature pages, there is more information on their website.

unless an order has been issued by the gov't, there is no requirement to send employees home, otherwise places like fargo, alaska, and maine would never get anything done. of course employees always have the option of calling in sick, but that might cost them a job.

For skinny folk, it's 60 degrees. For plumpies it be as low as 36 on a sliding scale.

i am not sure but i have worked in a place that got to - 60 ...and the main work area was 40 degrees.......and yeah a lot of illegal aliens worked there....we didn't get to go home....it was a meat packing plant....oh_hell
