While Saw 3 was kind of dumb it gives us a flashback about what happened to Adam after Jigsaw left him in the room.

As to why Jigsaw left him in the room, it was probably because the tasks set forth for him were not entirely completed. And Dr. Gordon could have thrown Adam the saw and done the same thing to his own foot. They never said Dr Gordon was the only one who was given the option to do that. So as a result, Jigsaw left Adam in the room.....but why.....I think it is because Jigsaw never killed anyone. He left that choice up to his victims. They chose their own fate, not him. And with Adam he chose not to cut his foot off and stay behind, and Jigsaw seemed ok with this.... But in.Saw 3, we are given a glimpse into what happened after he left, and if you ask me it didnt go like Jigsaw planned......it's somewhat speculation but I dont want to ruin it if you havent seen Saw 3 either.

That's not quite true - Adam could have amputated his leg with the saw. Well, I guess it was sorta difficult for him to figure out how to get out. But Jigsaw did not want to kill Adam, it would have been against what his purpose of capturing these people was - to teach them, and make them appreciate the meaning of life.
