It's Hidalgo. It had Viggo Mortenson in it(the guy who played Aragorn in LoTR) and was a really good movie. And it was from 2004.

The movie, as others have already pointed out, is "Hidalgo," but as for its being based on a true story . . . well . . . I know that's the tag line of the movie, but there is no evidence that the desert race ever actually took place. This is true for just about all of the other races Frank T. Hopkins (the character Mortensen plays) claims to have won. There was a man named Frank T. Hopkins, but that's about as far as the truth of the story goes.
