My church group wants to show "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" in our temple for study purposes. We are not going to charge for entrance, but want to secure permission beforehand since the video version we have is for home use only. This activity is scheduled for March 23, 2007.

As long as you're not charging money and the DVD was purchased, rather than pirated from the Internet, i don't think it should really matter. I used to watch movies in school all the time, like "The Breakfast Club" in Psychology and "Lord of the Rings" in Sociology and the school never got into trouble. If you want to be sure, though, there's an address on the back of the DVD case for the distributer that you can write to:

Buena Vista Home Entertainment , Inc.
Department CS
Burbank, CA
91521

But i don't think you should really have to. What they don't know won't hurt anyone, right? :p

If you are an educator (and I think this applies to churches as well), you can show a movie to "students" as long as you are not charging an admission charge.

Also, at the park I used to go to, they had outside movies, you could go and have a picnic and watch a movie, they did not secure any type of permission ever.

The rule of thumb is that you just can't charge any money for the viewing of the film and you will be ok. You might have a ton of red tape if you actually approach them with this.

I mean, think about every single day-care that shows disney movies every single day to kids, none of them have any type of permission.. you never see micky or donald duck drag away those day-care workers to disney jail do ya?? :)

Save yourself the grief and just show it, as long as no money changes hands, you will not be breaking any law.

I do not believe that you need permission. It would be like showing a movie in school. If you feel the need to check on it, try googling the walt disney company. They might have contact info on the company website.

On a somewhat similar note, I have a family member that has an embroidery machine. She downloads patterns off the net to put on shirts, etc. She gets alot of Disney stuff and she's researched it. As long as she's not using the Disney patterns to make a profit, it's legal.

I'm sure the movie situation is the same.

If you're not requiring any fee to view the movie then you do not need permission. School's always show Disney movies to their students and they don't need any special permission.

Walt disney sucks for that stuff.

My college had a walt disney themed homecoming, and they sent lawyers.

I would just show that damn thing and be done with it.

If disney tries to come after you legally, they will look like idiots.

I have gone through this before and as long as you are not charging or making a profit then you do not need permission. It is only when you are charging that you must get permission.
