Okay, it's my girlfriend's car, it's been UNBELIVEABLY COLD lately, like -20C (-27 with wind chill), that's about -5F or so. Her car revs a little high and has some trouble breaking. This goes away after about 10 minutes or so of driving. She let the car sit idling in the parking lot for 10 minutes or so before driving. I said it was due to the cold temperatures as her fluids' would be much thicker and need more time to warm up to allow for smooth driving. Am I right? If not, why?

That is correct, especially in hydraulic systems such as brakes, power steering, and hydraulic clutch cylinders. The fluid is much more dense at sub-freezing temperatures.

Idling for more than a minute or so is not good. The engine will warm up much better a little above idle (2,000 to 2,500 rpm), and the faster it warms up, the less wear on the internal parts. You should be driving gently after 30 secs to a minute. Problem is, idling higher means your brakes will need a much harder push, as you don't have as much vacuum boost. Also. if the car is automatic, the high idle will be trying to push the car while you are trying to stop, so the brakes have to work against the car's momentum and the engine's power. I'd take it to a good mechanic and have it checked - the cold idle speed may be set too high.

You should do like I did! My girlfriend said that boyfriends should buy their girlfriends a new car because they love them! She said that guys are soposed to do these things! So I got her a new Lexus to drive and she likes it a lot! (as long as I make the payments) Anyway, Its cold here to and the extreme cold does do strange things to cars. The problems you describe do happen in cold weather but I have to say that if they disappear after the car warms up good I wouldn't worry about them I would just let the car warm up for 20 min. instead of 10 and go to the auto parts store and get one of those block heaters they sell that you put in the bottom radiator hose these work great! and only cost about $20.00 you can put it in for her in 20 min. and she will love ya for doing it!.
