Globalization is not totally responsible for pollution or global warming.

First, ask yourself this question: What would my life be like if the people in my state did not buy goods and services from other states? You wouldn't be able to enjoy OJ, beer, computers, or cars. Certainly not French wines or Swiss chocolate! This will get you started in understanding why trade among states and countries is a good thing.

Second, pollution and global warming are mostly caused by the consumption of fossil fuels. The way to curb that is by higher taxes on gasoline consumption, for example. This will naturally reduce some globalization, to the extent that trade will become more expensive because transportation costs will be higher.

No one is going to stop globalization. It is too all encompassing of a movement, and there are many good things that it provides for the world, along with some of the bad thing....like every system that we could come up with.

The real option that people have when looking at special interests (even postiive ones like fighting pollution in order to save our environment) is through measures to make your special interest profitable for big businesses. Through the internet, people can create networks to lobby faster than ever before, information just spreads faster. People also can find out more about what they are consuming, and businesses are not stupid, if indivdiuals can show they are acting because of a specific injustice, the business will act to protect their profits.

Along the same lines, people have to work to make their culture attractive to the transmitters of culture. Though this isnt easy and maybe theres a threat of homogenization, the profit motive is not going to go away but at the same time this creates a workable avenue for positive things to be done as long as people can get good at mobilizing interest.

Globalization can be slowed considerably by nationalism. Many countries of the world harbor protectionist policies and subsequently limit their global transactions to only these that benefit their general population and the future of their country.

Pollution and the environment are a completely separate issue. If all the countries of the world were to strive to emulate America, pollution would run rampant. If on the other hand, the developing countries should choose to limit their growth through conscientious use of the worlds resources, then they will guarantee their present third world status.

It seems to me the only answer to your question is for America to take a genuine leadership role. The key word is genuine----. We have not been up to the task in recent decades.

There is nothing that can be done. Globalisation is inevitable and not a bad thing anyway.
