Some way to make your PC faster:

Disable some start up programs
Start Menu -> Run -> then type msconfig, i suggest you disable ALL of them, it wont cause a problem

Buy a new 256 RAM, so you ll have 512 RAM,( just buy same RAM you ve have.)

Defrag your disk
Start Menu -> Accesories -> System Tools -> Disk Defragmenter

Keep free space on your HD, each HD may have free space approx. 15%

Clean your registry, registry contains files created by software to comunnicate with windows or other software. I suggest Tune Up Utillities and CCleaner ( CCleaner.com its freeware! ). Unused registry will slown down your PC.

Use windows clasicc themes
Right click on desktop -> Properties -> choose windows clasicc for appearance ( It 10 mega less memory consum than XP appearance, 3 mega more if you disable the desktop background ). Dont use ANYTHING to enrich your PC visual ( themes, cursor, screensaver, docker, etc) it needs a lot of RAM.

Here are a few simple steps you can take:

1) Download a program called cclener ( http://www.ccleaner.com ) This is a great free utility that puts some nice common tasks together. First, do a straight clean, including the Advanced steps on the left. Second, run a registry check. Run it about 3 times until it is clean. Finally, clean up the Startup programs under Tools (button on the left). Remove any entries that do not absolutely need to be running.

2) Defrag your hard drive under the Accessories menu in Windows.

3) Using Control Panel or ccleaner, uninstall any programs that you really don't need.

4) Install or update any anti-virus/spyware software you have and run full system scans. If you need antivirus, try AVG from http://free.grisoft.com - they also have anti-spyware too. http://www.safer-networking.org will get you Spybot Search & Destroy - another great free antispyware program.

5) Run all the steps in clleaner again after steps 2-4.

This should helps things out. Upgrading to another 256mb or more of memory will also help, however I run the same set up (1.8ghz/256mb, XP Pro SP2) at work just fine.

BTW - what do you normally run for antivirus? I have found that the latest version of Norton Internet Security is really a system hog. Good program, but you really need some horspower and RAM to keep it from bogging your system down.

Hey. trust me i kno about this. I have a windows XP desktop and laptop. Sometimes it just gets cranky. what i would try to do, it worked for me, is when it does load up, run your virus scanner. A small virus might be in your files and causing the start up to be slow. If that doesn't work, go into your control panel and get rid of any unnecessary programs that you have. Silly stuff that has been downloaded by entering a certain website that you haven't been on it weeks. Try and get rid of as much as you can. If that doesn't work, i would suggest bringing it to the manufactering store where you got it from. they would know better than anyone how to troubleshoot their own product. Good Luck

sounds like you have alot of programs that are loading up with computer at start up, when you download programs or install something its default is to start upon start up you need that, get rid of everything in startup folder, if your careful go to start, run, type msconfig, click on the start up tab, now only uncheck programs you reconize, this will stop these programs from starting up, get some more RAM too 256 is really slow these days, add another 256 or even better add a 512 stick, also defrag hard drive....good luck!

Okay first off have you tried going in SAFE MODE? to do this tap on F11 until you see your desktop come up. When your in safe mode you can basicly figure out what the problem is. Another option it could be is a virus is caught up in your registry files, there is software out there for that. Try these!

Best thing to do is format and reload, if thats not an option clean up unused software, remove startup entries in registry and startup
folder, then do a spybot and adware check.

Click Start>Run>Type msconfig>Click StartUp Tab>Click Disable All>On the list Check your anti-virus, anti-spyware and anti-trojan (if you have those)>Then Click OK.

Follow those carefully or it will make things worse.

Goodluck..
