Everything which exists in this world today is the most evolved form in the descendency (not a word I know) of its family. We are not the peak of evolution for all species. If evolution was a conscious process everything would not necessarily be aspiring to be what we are. We are the best of what are ancestry of ape forms led up to - nothing is behind us and waiting to catch up - everything in the world today is evolved to the peak of it's kind.

The thing is though with humans destroying habitats and species all the time many species will not be able to evolve further from what they are now. For example the apes that we evolved from were chimp like organisms thousands of years ago and through im and adaptation to the environment evolved into us. This will never have another chance to happen because the great apes of today are being killed off.

That's quite a tricky question to answer. The oldest modern human remains on record, are currently dated at over 160,000 years old. Although, there is some information, which claims they may be even older. The 3 skull specimens are from Ethiopia, in East Africa. There have been many different types of hominids, of which new species are being discovered all the time. Whales themselves, are a very evolved type of animal. The oldest ancestors of whales are the Mesonychids, an extinct type of hoof-toed predator. Perhaps the oldest type of whale is Ambulacetus, otherwise known as 'Walking Whale'. It comes from Pakistan & was discovered by Anthropologist Johannes Thewissen. It didn't have external ears, but may have sensed vibrations on the ground or in the water. Chemical analysis of its teeth also, provide evidence that the animal could swim in Salt & Fresh water. One of the most un-evolved animals on the planet, is the Crocodilian. There are 3 main types today. Crocodilians, Alligatoroids, & Gharials. Caiman themselves, are a type of Alligator. The Black Caiman itself, is the largest living Alligator. Crocs have lived in the Earth for over 230 million years, & in spite of there being plant eating crocs & all the like, they have always retained the same basic body shape. Ultimately, however, the most evolved species on Earth is perhaps the Virus. They are continuously evolving, which is why scientists are constantly battling them. The Rattle Snake is an example in its own right. The venom in the snake's bite, is becoming more & more toxic each year. As scientists produce an anti-venom from the venom itself, the snake's venom just becomes ever more toxic. In a nutshell, it's just Nature's way.

I presume that by "most evolved" you mean, in human terms, "most intelligent". That's another argument!

If you were to ask the question in terms of what organisms are most uniquely evolved (or adapted) to their environment, then humans wouldn't come out on top. Some of the "simplest" organisms would fit into this category. On the other hand, some of the most complex organisms ever known became extinct at the end of the Cambrian period some 900 million years ago.

You cannot talk about and species being the "most evolved". It does not make sense, unless you are trying to argue a pseudo-creationist model with the superior human species, from the human perspective, at the top of the so-called evolutionary tree.

There is no "most evolved". There is best adapted to the current environment, but saying that something is "most evolved" implies a directionality in evolution that does not exist. Evolution only works to adapt organisms to CURRENT circumstances, and those circumstances change all the time. It's an anthropocentric view to say we are in any way better suited than other organisms, too. Insects are far more numerous than us, and many different lineages have been able to exist virtually unchanged for millions of years, like turtles and many kinds of ants and beetles and bacteria.

Just remember, evolution doesn't have an end goal, or direction, and therefore nothing can be called the "most evolved"!!!!

Well, there are many species that have evolved. We the humans can call ourselves the top of the chain, yet I would call micro-organisms such as protozoans, viruses and bacteria a close second if not first.

The human race has developed a classification for species that were at one time indigenous to the land, yet through natural calamities and man's disrespect for the environment, our national symbols were almost terminated. The grey wolf, the grizzley bear, the buffalo, Sperm Whales, Black and white rhinosourous, Trees plants and incects that survived more complictions than man could ever create.
However, I think AIDs, cancer and the common flu have definately becme a factor in taking over the lead.

All living creatures are a product of evolution. They have developed the right characteristics to fit a particular niche. Evolution is not a competition, there is no first second or last place. Humans are not better than other animals, they are just different. We could not live on grass as cattle do, there are many plants that are poisonous to us, but these same plants are eaten by other animals. We can't live within the Arctic circle, without special clothing, but polar bears and many other creatures do so using only what nature provided.

Depends what you mean by evolved.

Dolphins are commonly consider the most intelligent species in the world besides humans. This is determined by the complex social interactions and variety of language they exhibit.

But when you say "most evolved" you have to consider the cockroach (of which there are actually 3500 species.) They have been around for over 295 million years, which makes them older than the dinosaurs, and they have had all that time to evolve.

Humans are not the most evolved species in the world. Some insect species for instance are far more evolved than we are. Consider bees, the oldest known bee fossil is 100 million years old, they are a very evolved species.

Humans are not the most evolved species in the world, actually, I don't think you can say any species can be called most evolved. Species "choose" different strategies for survival, for some it is increased speed (jaguar for instance), for others keep quiet and do nothing (sloths), for still other complex cooperation (bees). In humans it is the brain that grew ridiculously large :-) gorilla's, chimpanzees and dolphins are other species that have relatively large brains.

Viruses!! They have evolved at a greater rate than even humans. They are mutating at an alarming rate. This is why we need different influenza vaccines every year. Every time a virus reproduces, there are minute variations in its structure and several generations down the line, a virtually new virus results.
