Perhaps it's because it's more on even ground then other sports between genders. Although girls only play against other girls in soccer the skills are prety much uiniversal and there is no physical disadvantage. Consider if a girl tried to "prove" herself by playing American football against boys. Not only would it be more difficult but socially she might be accused of being too "butch". Girls can play soccer and still appear feminine.
Also, boys are often led into the 3 main american sports of basketball, football and baseball. Interestingly, here in the UK soccer dominates boys sports and whilst girl soccer is probably just as healthy and prevalent over here as in the US, it is dwarfed just by how huge soccer is amoung men here. Girls are also less reluctant to teach soccer to girls because there is a long tradition of hockey and netball in English schools.

The popularity of soccer in the US is probably about even between the two genders. There are more college programs for women but that is not a sign of popularity. NCAA college programs are required to offer an equal number of scholarships to women and men (as they should). The scholarship drain of football prevents many colleges and universities from having a mens scholarship program for soccer.
In the youth ages baseball, hockey and basketball still draw a lot of young men. Even with those though soccer is still the fastest growing sport in the country. This applies to both genders.

Little boys here in the US are groomed to play either American footbal or baseball. Soccer becoming popular among girls has really exploded in the last 20 years and I think it was a clever way of introducing in general terms this globally beloved sport to the American masses.

Boys in the U.S. grow up having soooo many sports to chose to play. These boys usually get into a sport which is a favorite of their fathers and grandfathers, etc., so they can please them and inturn, get good advice and coaching. Girls, however, don't have this "gotta please the parent" hanging over their heads and get into a sport that they like and is popular with their peers. That is why girls play and watch more soccer in the states.

For a start its called FOOTBALL because its a ball and you use your feet to kick it. American "football" should in fact be called American rugby but we won't get into that now. Maybe its because the girls over there actually want to be different for your "jocks" and play a competitive sport but just for FUN you yanks take sport way to seriously, its only a game after all!!!
