Never, without freedom you cannot be guaranteed protection.
Freedom gives us the right to speak for what is rightfully ours.

What do I care if I am safe if I have no freedom? If I have no freedom I am a slave..and slavery is not life.
Those those who would sacrifice freedom for security you will lose both and deserve neither.
Fun Fact...if you look at history you will see one HUGE glaring fact...the biggest threat to a society's welfare and security is almost always THE SOCIETY'S OWN GOVERNMENT..so how does trading in freedom protect you?
Andrew V: Your bit about the Supremecy clause is correct, however, the main thing now in Federal vs State is that the Federal govt is stepping into State Territory given to them by the Constitution...in other words the federal govt has been in violation of of their oaths of office and been poaching in the state govt's backyard.
KC V: I work for a telephone company and I can tell you that with today's technology and the laws in place the government not *does* but can monitor your every move and word. A random joke on the phone about drugs can and has already launched police action on people. I don't see why they have to make it ok to just steal all this info when a wiretap warrent is easier to get than a cheesesteak in Philly...perhaps they don't like paper records that could be traced if the info is abused?

Freedom means everything to me. Security is an illusion. You know I am in no hurry to die, but at the same time I do not fear it because I know it will happen. It could be in terrorist attack, or it could be slipping in the bathtub. The only way the government can ensure me even the most basic security is to completely suspend all freedom. Once freedom is lost it is very hard to regain and what is the point of being secure if I lose the thing I value most. I do believe we should allow the government some latitude given the issues facing us today, but we cannot give them a blank check to destroy our lives based on fear mongering and situations they cannot completely control under any circumstances.

Super Ruper is on point.
Do all of you really think we're "free" in the US?
Not many of the 300 million in the US would be able to live on their own without the infrastructure that the state holds up beneath them.
How would you eat? Farmers make up less than one percent of the population.
What would you do to resolve disputes? The state holds a monopoly of power which keeps us from killing each other.
What do we need to be "protected" from? Terrorism? Yeah, right. Ourselves, maybe. But the government stopped acting in our interest long ago.

In essence, we already do...
Even in the US, a person is not truly free to do anything that he chooses. There are laws, designed to protect society, that limit our freedoms. Our incomes are taxed, and we are not free to decline from paying them.
Freedom is a utopian myth...but something that keeps us sane, just thinking about it. And protection, well thats relative..

You have to define what potential freedoms are lost!
There are so many on here asking such a generalized question that, of COURSE, most are going to say "no."
If you were to consider the freedom from certain "privacy invasion," my next concern would be the same...what TYPE of invasion.
A misconstruded idea the the US is violating everyones right to privacy through telephonic and communications monitoring is NOT what some in the public believe it is!
The methods used to "fish" for "questionable activities" by suspected terrorists are very unique and quite technical. However, the average person has NOTHING to worry about unless they are communicating their plans to bring terror upon the rest of us!
Best wishes!

No. And if you are referring to the Patriot Act, I am against it. Once we give up a freedom, it is nearly impossible to get it back.

everyone does. we give up our freedom to kill people by making murder illegal. we give up our freedom to rape as we please by making that illegal too. by making anything illegal we give up our freedom to participate in that act because we deem it "immoral" for any person in a "civilized" society to do so. every person has a different opinion on how much freedom they want to give up for safety. as far as American history goes, we progressively move towards a stronger central government, mainly out of fear.(think patriot act or V for Vendetta) which in turn does not value the rights of the individual or minority as much. as much as states rights (think Massachusetts gay marriage or decriminalization of marijuana in Colorado.) due to the Supremecy Clause in the constitution, federal law reigns supreme and states laws must always follow federal laws.
i dont mean to say that the government does not ensure rights. there have been periods in history when the governement was a body that people looked to for rights, but there have also been period where government has acted unconstitutionaly and disregarded amendment rights of the individual to better serve "the common good".
but as for my opinion, i my stance on many "freedom v protection/saftey" has put me in the freedom camp. however i must drive this point home that everyone wants certain freedoms to be considered illegal, unless your an anarchist. it all depends on the topic.

That answer is simple; NO!!!
Ben Franklin once stated: "If you give up your liberty for temporary security you deserve neither liberty nor security."
Think about it. What will happen if you give up your freedom? The government will just keep taking and deriving more fear from us until every last one of OUR GOD GIVEN RIGHTS are gone. This kind of fear mongoring only begets more tyranny. We need to tell Bush where to stick his Patriot Act; right up his ***! To ask one to give up their rights is downright unPatriotic. I agree wholeheartedly with Patrick Henry: "Give me liberty or give me death!!"

If you live in any nation, you do. The liberty of the laws of nature are sacrificed to create civilization. That is the basic foundation of the social contract and reciprocity.
The real question is at what time does sacrifice of liberty for freedom eliminate liberty from society completly?
