You could still have both. Our three cats go in and out all day and they are still protected.

Uhhhh, I would be a cat.
What would I know about freedom as we know the term.

I had 4 cats for about 20 years each (concurrently) and occasionally in those 20 years one or two got out of the house.
Either a door was left open or a window screen wasn't put in place correctly.
All they did was meow to get back in and the others didn't even attempt to go outside.
They were interested, but not that interested.

Freedom from what? A cat is much safer inside and will have the freedom of the house. If you give the cat lots of TLC and toys it will not care about being outside where all the dangers are.
My cat is afraid to go out and I am very glad. She is very content to being inside and safe. She is 23 years old and still plays like a kitten.

If I was a cat I wouldn't necessarily be aware of the dangers that faced me, and probably wouldn't appreciate the protection I was getting.
I have two cats and they are indoor cats with limited access to outside. I have known too many cats that have been run over by cars, sucumbed to fights with raccoons or other animals, or fell ill because of diseases from other cats.

If I were a cat I would probably make a compromise there. I'd select a protective and very nice owner with a beautiful home and lots of treats, but I would insist on a good measure of independence. Meow! Brrrreep!

I have 3 house cats and several barn cats. My house cats will go outside on occasion but usually only for a few minutes and they want to come back in. One of them prefers to look out doors and windows then to actually go out.

The barn cats stay close to home even though there is really nothing stopping them from roaming.

no! freedom feeds the soul right of being your own person. Take away that and ur declaring yourself a mar-ta, not worthy to being an equal amongst humans.
