I understand I need a "crossover" and not a "Patch" cable, but how do I configure the software (ie windows) on each machine? I have Windows XP (Home, SP2) on the PC and Windows XP (Tablet Edition) on the Laptop. I've also got Broadband internet thru a USB modem to the PC which I'd like to share with the laptop, but that could be a side issue, as I'll upgrade with a wireless hub later in the year.

Actually, the easiest thing to do would be to upgrade your USB modem to a wireless hub now.
Both PCs would have access to the Internet, as well as, each others devices and files.

I agree with TimC, if your out of contract with your current ISP, see if they have a free wireless deal if you sign back in to a 12 month contract. AOL and BT both offer existing members a free router if they renew however don't publicise this.
