the reason why the midwest has such varying temperatures is because it is dry, and far away from teh ocean. Water moderates temperatures, because it has such a specific ehat. that's why coastal regions have relatively cool summers and warm winters. Drier regions have intense temperature fluctuation.
Kind in mind that global warming is global, and it is the average temperature. That means on average, for the entire year, the entire globe is warming up. For a specific region, it may be colder or something at one time, but overall fro the rest of the world for th rest of the year it's warmer than before.

El Nino does make everything warmer but there has been data showing that El Nino is Disapearing and causing the weather cool down a bit. Thats a good thing now because there is no wierd weather conditions but El Nino will cause the State of Florida to get effected the most with the hurricanes. El Nino wont be there to block us from hurricanes

There can be short-lived (yup, 4 weeks is "short" in terms of global climate), local cooling even in global warming. It's the average over the whole planet.
When I was in junior high (now called middle school) (in the late '60's), the big concern was the coming ice age! Thirty years is short, too, in terms of global climate.
I am so sorry about your local ice age. Hope some warming blows your way soon!

Global warming is a long term global trend. What we are experiencing right now in the Midwest (I'm in Minnesota) is a short term local event.

Back in 1979 there was a front page article in Newsweek about the coming freeze. Maybe they were right. Or maybe it was a hoax just using science to promote a political agenda. You might want to look at this article for further explanations:
