How soon after an interview should you inquire about the status of your application?

I did send a Thank you note after the initial interview....should I follow up with another note?

Normally, one week is appropriate. A thank-you note is polite but unnecessary. Most HR people don't expect such things. It's just more paperwork to handle. I don't recommend a second thank you note.

However, if you can find a "legitimate" reason to send a followup note that adds positive information about your qualifications, do so. Such as:

"Dear (name of the person who interviewed you)
Thank you for considering me for the position of (whatever). During the interview, you asked about my experience with (whatever), and I don't believe I explained fully that I performed a similar job for two years at the XYZ company while I attended college. It was not part of my regular job position so I did not include it in my resume. If you need additional information about my credentials, please contact me at (phone or email)."

Don't panic if the company does not contact you for as long as three weeks, but keep in touch with them once a week with a polite (and short) phone call to assure that the job has not yet been filled. Meanwhile, continue your job search. No job is the "only one in town".

In today's fast-paced market, things can happen quick. If they did not say how long, call in 3 days and say, "I am sorry to bother you so I won't take up much of your time. I really liked the job we talked about and was anxious to find if you had made any decision."

They say "not yet", be sure to ask when they will be making the decision?" If they don't know, ask if they mind if you check back in a week.

No matter what else you say, even if they say you didn't get the job, "Thank you very much for considering me. I think your company is exactly the kind of company I am looking for and I am a person that could help the company reach it's goals."

If you have not heard anything within 7 days you could give them
a call and inquire about the status of your application. If the
position was filled they will tell you so, if not filled, at least they
will know you are still interested.
