The answer above is not entirely true.

The MCAT is scored with 3 major subsections (score range: 1-15), combining to equal a total of 45 potential points. There is also a letter grade appended at the end to denote your writing score (score range: J-T, T being the highest). Hence, the highest combined score is thus 45T.

The 1st section is Physical Sciences: This section combines Physics and General Chemistry (aka Inorganic Chemistry). Questions in this section will test you on information from the test passages and synthesizing it with knowledge you have from outside the passages given.

The 2nd section is Verbal Reasoning: Unlike the other two sections, Verbal Reasoning requires no outside knowledge, and forces you to utilize information solely within the passages given. During the actual exam, the writing samples will be administered during this time block. The Verbal score is arguably the most important one-- and medical schools tend to scrutinize this score the hardest. This is largely because research suggests that the success of accepted students are correlated the most highly with their Verbal reasoning score.

The 3rd section is Biological Sciences: It combines disciplines from Biology and Organic Chemistry. Both this section and Physical Sciences utilizes information from outside of passages given.

The average score is around a 24, and the average score for a medical school matriculant is approximately 30.

there are four sections. one is a essay writing section. no one cares what you get on this section. not even a little bit. it's scored with letters, t being best.
one is an "english" section. about language and writing, like the sat. people schools only mildly care about this section, it's scored 1-15, 15 is best.
next is biological sciences. biology, some chemistry. scored 1-15.
next is physical sciences, which is more chemistry ( general and organic) and physics. scored 1-15.
schools look at your scores of the three numbers, ie 45 is awesome. good luck.
