If you want to access the internet on all three PCs using a DSL connection, you will need a router or a hub. It is possible to do it without a router or hub, but it's insanely expensive and unnecessary. I suggest a router by all means. The problem with a hub using DSL, is that you would have to pay for two other accounts (IP Addresses) with your DSL server which would triple your bill. But with a router, it assigns the IP Addresses for you. So a hub is possible but completely unnecessary and expensive. Even if you're not going wireless, a router is the best and cheapest way to go. And no a router cannot be used to share a connection with dial up. Routers only work with broadband connections. To get multiple connections with dial up you would need multiple phone lines. And to use a PC as a server you have to have a broadband/cable/DSL connection.

Switch to DSL first. It makes no sense to network a dial up connection unless DSL is not available. Then get a router.
No, it is not necessary to have a PC used as a server. It is called "Peer to Peer" networking where there is no server.

in order to hook up more than one computer to the main internet connection, you need a router. i would highly not recommend using the dial-up scenario. it will be way too slow for all three pcs to use the same phone line. please get dsl! hope this helps!

usualy the inet connection is restricted by mac . so , you should buy a rooter to split the connection .
if you use a rooter you do not need to use a computer as a server .

or you can use a switvh after the modem and , in case the connection in restricted by mac you need to use a coputer as a proxy server for the others .

good luck

a connection is a connection, however you share the connection is entirely up to you, if you already have the computers connected togehter and are sharing the dialup connection all you have to do is change the actual connection to whatever (DSL, Cable, or whatever).
