As far as I know nurses have always been nurses. The first real hospitals were developed in the early 1800's, and there were "nurses" to take care of them. Before this there were wetnurses and midwifes.....

Mid Wife = singular
Midwives = Plural

there were midwives -- but they were just for delivering babies. nurses used to mean more like nanny.
