I have been stuck in an elevator for almost 2 hours with 14 strangers in a hospital. (hospitals generally have larger elevators, but is was it was still very cramped in there), after about 5 minutes you are little perturbed, usually that is when the language starts to get a little obscene.

After 10 minutes you are desperate, that is when people start to band on the door and repeatedly slam the help button.

After an hour you come to accept it, engage in mindless banter, maybe tell jokes, stories. At that point you think you are going to be stuck in there for hours upon hours, you really work hard to divert your thoughts away from being stuck in an elevator.

First of all I would thank god that I was not stuck in there by myself...(I have been stuck in an elevator once by myself for 5 minutes or so...it was an old highrise apartment...seemed like forever though)
The first 5 minutes would be kind of funny to me.. then after 10 minutes I would start to frantically push all the buttons that where available in the elevator..I guess after an hr most of the people including me would have sat on the ground and we would talk about our life stories..

Well I was born in an elevator so I would be right at home! I am one of those people who people tell their life stories to in line at the market. So by the end of an hour I would have enough info for another book.

after 5 mins: we have called the elevator company to get us out, and we are calm.

after 10 mins: the company technician calls and says he will be late due to traffic.

after 1 hour: we are still waiting for the technician, but in the meantime we got to know each other, shared a few jokes, our telephone numbers, and arranged to meet all together Saturday evening for coffee.

If I knew I wasnt in any danger I'd sit down and strike up a conversation with the strangers....If I was unsure ....I'd still try to strike up a conversation because talking would help everyone calm down and relax so the situation wouldnt be so bad. Plus who wants to be stuck in an elevator with 5 people who are having a nervous break down?

--but that'd be as much for me as it was for them. i'm scared to death of elevators, and I'd want to do anything to keep myself from freaking out, even if that was talking to a bunch of total strangers (and I'm pretty anti social)

That is a situation I hope never to be on. I am calm under pressure but I could only hope the others are. As long as I don't have to go to the washroom, no problem. Now that would be a good question. What if one of those 5 had to use the washroom right then, what would you do.

Hopefully none of the other 5 are psycotic(sp?)
I would hope that I would stay calm and not add
to the problem. I would probably start talking to
the others and try and find the emergency button and start pushing it. After an hour I might start
a sing-a long.

I would talk to them and see what walks of life that they came from. See who was the most stupid so if we were in there for to long i would eat them first. (lol just playing) I would get to know them really and see what we had in common. Also i would see if anyone had some skills that could help us get out of the elevator.
