People to Mars? Many decades at least. Of course unmanned missions have been going to Mars since the 1970s.

Nasa is aiming for about 10 years. It may be a race with commercial interests though. The next twenty years will see the beginnings of space tourism, 0-g manufacturing, and the colonization of the inner solar system.

I'd say that in less than 20 years rich folks will be able to buy a seat on a space liner and do a couple orbits around Mars.

NASA is thinking on manned missions to Mars for 2015.
Europe has a project for 2024.
